Foot Skills and Footwork Training Drills

Footwork (feints) consists of moves by players to deceive the opponent in order to gain space.

Through the use of a fake/feint the ball carrier is attempting to make the opponent think that he/she is going to dribble, pass, or shoot in one direction while actually playing the ball in a different direction.

The basic building blocks of foot skills are learning to control the ball with the three primary surfaces used for dribbling and passing: inside of the foot, outside of the foot, and sole of the foot. It is important that a player learns to use all surfaces on each foot.

Click on each of the following links for a description of a foot skill that teaches one of the building blocks.  These skills are divided into three categories based on the number of touches and complexity of the move. The beginner skills are simple touches of the ball usually by a single foot surface (i.e. inside of both feet) while the advanced moves require the use of multiple foot surfaces while changing direction at game speed.

Click on each of the following links for a description of the specific drills designed to help develop player's foot skills.

On each sheet you will see a description of the drill, diagram of the drill, minimum age to start using the drill, minimum number of players necessary to effectively use the drill, minimum amount of time to allow for the drill, and coaching tips (if applicable):
