Shielding Drills

Shielding is when a player legally positions his body so the defender can't touch the ball without fouling. For example, the ballhandler shifts the ball to his foot that is farthest from the defender, stays low with his knees bent and feet apart so he can't get easily pushed off the ball, and stiffens the arm nearest the defender. The arm can't be used to push the defender but it can point down and slightly out.

Click on each of the following links for a description of the specific drill designed to help develop players' shielding skills. On each sheet you will see a description of the drill, a diagram of the drill, minimum age to start using the drill, minimum number of players necessary to effectively use the drill, minimum amount of time to allow for the drill, and coaching tips.
