WDMSC Select Teams Excel at Iowa State Cup

West Des Moines Soccer Club U15-18 select teams brought home 4 championships and 1 team was runner up at the 2006 Iowa State Cup completed in October at Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Cedar Falls.  Championships were won by WDMSC Heat (U15 girls), WDMSC Xtreme (U16 girls), WDMSC Ultimate (U16 boys) and Fuerza (U18 girls). U13 & U14 teams will compete for State Cup in May, also in Cedar Falls.

State champions will compete against champions from the 14-state Midwest region in the United States youth Soccer Association Midwest Regional tournament being held in Des Moines on June 23-27. Winners of each of 4 regional tournaments will compete for national championships in July.

Competing in the Iowa State Cup, the state championship for select soccer teams U13 and older, is the culmination of a year of work for these teams. Teams U15 and older compete in State Cup in the fall of each year because those players participate in high school soccer in the spring. U13 & U14 teams compete for State Cup in May of each year.

“We are proud of the success of all of our teams at the recent State Cup. Their success and sportsmanship was a real tribute to the club and their families," said Grant Friesth, Director of Competitive Soccer at WDMSC.

Olympic Development Team Placement
Over 35 West Des Moines Soccer Club players have been selected so far for the 2006-07 Iowa Olympic Development Program (ODP). ODP is a program run by the United States Soccer Federation through its state affiliates to identify top talent. State ODP teams are formed each year via tryouts and are made up of talented soccer players from all over the state of Iowa. These teams train together, play in tournaments and attend state and Regional ODP training camps.

Based on tryouts at regional camps, a few state ODP players are also selected to play on regional and national teams. Congrautlations to WDMSC players MacKenzie Misel for being selected to the Region ODP team for 2005-06!

For more information on ODP go to the Iowa Soccer association website - www.iowasoccer.org.
